Researchers: Cause of mad cow disease found

BSEの原因、初めて解明か

BSE: 牛海綿状脳症。狂牛病。神経変性疾患の一種で、1980年第に英国で初めて発症した。

　研究者は12月18日、BSEの原因を見つけたとした。一方でこの病気の再出現を避けるため、予防手段を講じていく必要性を強調した。

 Several hypothese have been put forward over the cause of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative disease that was dubbed "mad  cow disease" when it first appeared in the 1980s in the United Kingdom.

dubbed~: ～と言い換えられ、～と呼ばれ

 The illness belongs to a family of ailments involving misfolding proteins that are known as prions. These also exist in other diseases, such as scrapie in sheep and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.

scrapie: 脳を侵す伝染病。スクレイピー

　1980年台に話題になったBSEですが、意外にも初めて原因が明らかになったのですね。食肉偽装事件とか、獣医師の自殺など、色々この病気にまつわる事件があったようです。
